Thanksgiving is here already. These flakey and delicious Apple Rose Tarts offer the warm comfort of apple pie with fewer calories that the whole family will love.
We’ve used Mettrum Originals Hemp Seed Flour to add a nutritional boost and sweetened our treats with pure Canadian maple syrup.
3 red apples
½ tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. pure maple syrup
1 tbsp. Icing sugar
1 1/8 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1/8 cup of Mettrum Originals Hemp Seed Flour
½ cup butter, chilled. Cubed.
¼ cup water
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Cut butter into the mixture until the mixture becomes flaky and course.
Slowly add water one teaspoon at a time, stirring until a dough forms.
Wrap in saran wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Cut each apple in half, and remove the core.
Slice apples into very thin slices.
Fill a large bowl half full of water.
Add in apple slices and lemon juice. Microwave for 5 minutes until apple slices are tender.
Remove the apples from the water and set to the side.
Place dough on a flat, well-floured surface and roll into a long, thin rectangle, roughly 10 x 15.
Cut this into 6 equal pieces.
Brush pastry with maple syrup, sugar and sprinkle cinnamon.
Place approx. 7 apple slices along the top half of the pastry, peel side facing up.
Fold the pastry in half to cover the bottom of the apple slices.
Starting at one end, start to roll the pastry and apples until it forms a rose.
Place each apple rose into a muffin tin.
Continue until you have 6 apple roses.
Bake at 375 for 40 – 45 minutes.
Let cool slightly and dust with icing sugar.
